(Heather, on the right, created a custom necklace for herself and running partner, Jalaine, to be worn during a 178 mile relay run.)

It was so amazing! My first race ever, and what a wonderful experience for a "first-timer." Our relay team left Logan, UT at 8:20 a.m. and 36 hours later crossed the finish line at approximately 3:30 Saturday afternoon. My first run was at 2:00 p.m. on Friday--and I was NOT prepared for the heat! I was miserable, tired, and pretty much hated every second of that run. I was wondering, "What the heck have I gotten myself into???" My second run was at midnight and much better. The cool air felt wonderful, I had a pacer riding his bike next to me, and despite the fact that I was running uphill it felt great. My last run was at 11:00 a.m. Saturday and was my absolute favorite. Running to the exchange point and handing the bracelet off to Jalaine, knowing that "I've done it!" and beat my personal goals (I aimed for 11 minute miles; guessed that I'd actually run 12-13 minute miles, and after inspection discovered that I had actually run 10 minute miles! Wahoo!).

Our van was incredible-we had every fitness level from beginners like me to incredible athletes who amazed everyone. We all cheered each other on, helped each other, and felt happy when we did well. Both vans met at the finish line in Park City and waited for the last runner to come through, then joined her and ran across the finish line together. What a feeling!! I could never imagine how amazing it would feel.

Looking back, I realize that the experience was much like a boot camp; going from excited, to exhausted physically and mentally, pushing yourself even further, then being built back up in a positive way. It was a life-changing experience for me! I am already excited for the next race I will run. My motto for myself: "You don't have to be fast, you just have to keep going."

Jalaine amazed me. She beat every personal goal she made for herself and absolutely inspired everyone. I am so proud of her! I sent a picture of she and I at the finish line. We took that picture for you--made sure our necklaces were proudly displayed and wanted you to know how much they mean to us and even reminded us to "Just keep running."

-Heather Hallam (and Jalaine too)  Logan, UT
