Life is really good at throwing Surprise Parties, kind of like those early morning come-as-you-are parties. With your hair a wreck and your pajamas wrinkled, you are totally caught off guard.
The spring of 2001 was one of our first family Surprise parties. Our oldest son, Seth was diagnosed with a malignant tumor in the middle of his back. By the time we started treatment it looked like he had lost his hamburger underneath his shirt!
I had always thought that cancer left few survivors. This belief left me limp as we left the hospital that first day. We returned the following day for more testing and as I wandered the halls in the oncology clinic I had a reason to celebrate. There before me was a huge bulletin board overflowing with pictures and stories of children who had been treated at this children’s hospital and who had actually survived! Tears spilled down my cheeks as I realized there WAS hope.
Seth put my feelings into words as we walked past that board on our way home. I gathered the courage to use the “C word” for the first time and said, “Look Seth, all those kids had cancer too.” Seth looked up at me and said, “So, when do I get my picture up there?”
For the next year the parties continued. Seth spent a week in the hospital receiving treatment and two weeks at home. During our home time we celebrated with many family and friends who rallied around and gave us strength. We celebrated that the cancer didn’t spread. We partied after the surgery when they were certain they had removed it all! Seth received gifts, blankets, prayers on his behalf and love from so many partygoers! We cheered when he was able to remain strong and mostly healthy throughout treatment. Even though our surprise party caught us off guard, we look back on it with tender memories. It was definitely a time of growth and an amazing opportunity for us to witness the merciful hand of God in our lives.
One memory that stands out was June of 2002 when Seth had his last chemotherapy treatment. But the best celebration of all came in September of 2007 when Seth had his last official oncology check-up and we heard the triumphant words… “You are Cancer Free, You are a Survivor! Party On!”
